Bennetto - Amaranth & Sea Salt Chocolate

Rich dark 60% Peruvian chocolate textured with popped amaranth grains and a sprinkling of sea salt.

Amaranth grains were once considered a staple food in the Inca, Maya and Aztec civilisations. It is classified as a pseudocereal, meaning that it’s not technically a cereal grain like wheat or oats, but it shares a comparable set of nutrients and is used in similar ways. Its earthy, nutty flavour works well in a variety of dishes including with Bennetto dark chocolate and added sea salt.

This nutritious grain is naturally gluten-free and rich in protein, fiber, micronutrients and antioxidants.

The journey of this bar starts with the farmers’ cooperative called ‘Acopagro’. This Peruvian Fairtrade cooperative, made up of 2000 small-scale farmers, is based in the Amazon jungle. This long-standing cooperative supports education, opportunities for women and reforestation in the Amazon – while perfect growing conditions produce a vibrant and a naturally-fruity organic cocoa.

In addition to cocoa, these farmers also plant timber trees to increase the cocoa farmers’ long-term income. At the same time this planting will offset all carbon emissions produced during the chocolate manufacturing process. To be precise, 1 new tree is planted for every 1000 bars produced.

Bennetto Natural Foods Co (CHCH)

Bennetto Natural Foods Company was founded by Lucy Bennetto in 2010, a real food lover and inspiration behind everything they do. With a desire to see first hand how the cacao beans were grown, Lucy travelled to the Dominican Republic. This was the moment she saw how ethical sourcing from an organic and Fairtrade cocoa supply was imperative to her values of making chocolate and how these practices not only improve lives but also the quality and flavour of cocoa.
From the kitchen benchtop, Lucy then started refining chocolate, and still continues to develop new chocolate recipes. Recently, Lucy has partnered with a Swiss manufacturer to co-produce the majority of Bennetto chocolate products (to be able to ensure the chocolate can be certified), but some smaller batches and all product development are still done by Lucy and her team in Christchurch. The majority of cocoa is now sourced from Acopagro, a Fairtrade cooperative at the base of the Amazon Jungle in Peru.
