When Barrys Bay Cheese produced its first cheddar in 1895, it was just one of nine small, family-owned dairy cooperatives dotted around Banks Peninsula. Daniel Shields and wife Amy bought Barrys Bay Cheese in 2017. But that’s not where the association started. Their distribution business, purchased in 2012, has been distributing Barrys Bay cheeses since 2004. They’ve had a lot of time to learn about selling cheese and now the adventure continues as they learn how to make it. With two businesses, three kids and a dog life is busy, but there’s still time to head out on the bikes, go tramping or sneak away for an all too rare surf.
