Organic Eggs

The Little Organic Egg Co of NZ in Manawatu takes the best practices of pastured egg farming and guarantee that their hens only eat 100% organic.

Their entire property is certified organic, and their passion is to continue to grow New Zealand’s sustainable organic future. They have two organic flocks farmed in accordance with the Asure Quality Organic Certification - the strictest certification you can get in NZ.

Their pastures are planted with pine nut trees for food and shelter, plus hens have huge barns in which they can roost, get out of the extreme weather, feel safe from birds of prey and rodents. They can roam  daily in mixed species pastures to dig and chase bugs, fresh water, nice sandy areas for dust bathing and shaded pine nut plantations outside. They love this natural environment!

There are no sprays, chemicals, antibiotics, synthetic fertilizers or GMO additives used on their property. We also supplement their feed with Oyster Grit for calcium, as these ladies go through a fair amount.

This passion and dedication to quality means all that sunshine give their eggs higher Vitamin D levels (2 eggs give you the DRI) and they are rich sources of selenium, vitamin D, B6, B12 and minerals such as zinc, iron and copper. These eggs are a source of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K and lecithin. Vitamin D is important for the absorption of calcium from your stomach and for the functioning of calcium in your body.

The Little Organic Egg Co of NZ operates with their Hen's welfare paramount - always well exceeding the requirements of the Animal Welfare Code.

Under these guidelines, they are allowed 7 birds/m2 on the perch (within the barns) but they choose to run just over 5 birds/m2. Outside in pasture they are allowed to have 2500 birds/ha, but strongly believe they need more so that a good portion of their diet can be natural pasture forage. That's why so our stocking ration is 650 birds/ha.

  • Store eggs at a constant temperature below 20°C - this maintains freshness and quality. The fridge is the best place to keep them in domestic kitchens

  • Keep eggs in their original boxes when storing - this ensures any odours from surrounding foods are shut out

  • If you take eggs out of their box, make sure you store and use them in date order

  • Take them out of the fridge half an hour before cooking for the best results, otherwise the sudden change in temperature could crack the shell or lower its binding qualities in baking

  • Store away from strong smelling food - egg shells are porous

  • Store away from raw meat

  • Wash your hands before and after handling eggs

  • Never use dirty, cracked, or broken eggs
